On January 2, 2025, I started on a painting, looking back over the Cowichan estuary at the clouds back in the valley catching the morning light.
It didn’t feel finished that first day, so I had another go at it the next day.

Not a big change, and I still wasn’t sure I liked it.

I decide to tackle the idea again from scratch. I changed the format, went square, and tried to emphasize the brightness of the clouds.
This one I much prefer! It feels like a PAINTING rather than just a picture. The brushstrokes are obvious, and the colours are more striking. I’m not saying I think this one is perfect, but this is definitely the direction I want to be heading - away from illustration into more impressionistic painting.
